Celebrating Women: An Insight into the Girls Club Zine Project ????

In an era where creativity meets self-expression, zines provide an essential platform for voices that yearn to be heard. Today, we dive into the story of one such fascinating project – Girls Club Zine, a stellar example of a feminist zine that echoes the celebration of women. As an accomplished Celebrating Women Zine printer, Ex Why Zed is proud to have been a part of this incredible journey.

The Inspiration ????

Georgia Murray, the founder of Girls Club Zine, launched the zine as a product of her final MA project. Amidst glossy high-end projects, she chose to walk the road less travelled. Influenced by her interest in Rookie and Mushpit, she crafted something unique – a zine that captured the multifaceted nature of women, offering a seamless blend of fashion, feminism, music, and body positivity.

Every issue of Girls Club Zine tells a different tale, thanks to the diverse pool of graphic designers involved. Yet, each one retains the essence of the Girls Club aesthetic. In Georgia’s words, “It’s evolved in that the first issue was mainly my own writing, but since then it’s been contributor-led.”

In today’s volatile political climate, creating a feminist zine like Girls Club Zine feels “important and cathartic”, according to Georgia. It offers a space for the exploration of mental health issues, body image, loneliness, and grief. Amidst the upheaval, this zine serves as a safe harbour, echoing the struggles and triumphs of its readers.

Taking inspiration from Georgia’s zeal, other zine creators have also stepped forward with their distinct projects. Ex Why Zed has been fortunate to have worked on Hate Zine Issue 2, Leftovers Zine, Swirl Zine, So Young, Lost and Found Magazine, and Jake Tilson’s Ninja Peanut Zine Series, each telling their unique stories, all bearing witness to the rise of the zine culture.

The Print Specs ????

Girls Club Zine was crafted as an A5 Portrait Booklet with a 4pp cover onto 170gsm Uncoated. The 72pp text was printed onto 90gsm Uncoated, boasting of full-colour print throughout. Finally, it was trimmed, collated, and wire-stitched to perfection.

Brilliant communication from start to finish. Mike had endless patience for the many questions we asked. The guides provided were easy to follow and super helpful (the video guides are a must watch too). Our order of hardback illustrated children's books was delivered expertly packaged and on time. As for the finished product itself - stunning - a real joy to finally hold, beautifully made and perfectly printed! We couldn't have asked for more. Well, we did - we instantly placed an order for paperback children's colouring books too, which we are equally as happy with. Look forward to working with Ex Why Zed again in the future.
