Case Study: ‘Spirit of Adventure’ – A Creative Union of Art, Design and Print

SMC Design and Ex Why Zed conjure a masterpiece of art catalogue printing.

Introduction

‘Spirit of Adventure’, a coffee table art catalogue designed by SMC Design, encapsulates the true essence of artistic expression, perfectly printed by Ex Why Zed. Meticulously crafted, this catalogue has been pivotal in elevating the appreciation of onboard artwork collections on Saga’s new boutique cruise ship.

The Concept

The ‘Spirit of Adventure’ art catalogue features the stunning artistry that adorns the new boutique cruise ship by Saga. SMC Design, a leading name in interior and graphic design for the maritime industry, conceived this innovative art catalogue. They used their expertise to transform their digital vision into a tangible book that brings the ship’s artwork collection to life.

The Design

For the print, a unique blend of luxury and innovation was used. The A4 case-bound books feature a cover wrapped in GF Smith’s 135gsm Colorplan New Blue paper over a greyboard case. This elegant material, renowned for its high quality, evokes a sense of exclusivity and a bond with the sea. Additionally, the interior comprises 114 pages printed onto 170gsm silk, enabling each artwork to shine in vibrant detail.

The Print

As specialist printers, Ex Why Zed was tasked with bringing SMC Design’s vision to life. Utilizing their HP Indigo press, Ex Why Zed produced a stunning final product. The rich, tactile quality of the GF Smith Colorplan paper gave the cover a remarkable finish, further enriching the overall experience of the catalogue.

The catalogue included 2x 4pp unprinted end papers onto 170gsm uncoated stock, and a four-colour print throughout. Each page was expertly trimmed, collated, and case bound, ensuring the catalogue’s durability and longevity.

Conclusion

The ‘Spirit of Adventure’ catalogue serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, precision, and respect for the artistic process. The project reinforces Ex Why Zed’s ability to deliver high-quality artist catalogue printing that bridges the gap between design and print.

RODNEY MATTHEWS, LEGENDARY CONCEPTUAL ARTIST
Ex Why Zed makes self publishing a truly pleasurable experience!
Brilliant communication from start to finish. Mike had endless patience for the many questions we asked. The guides provided were easy to follow and super helpful (the video guides are a must watch too). Our order of hardback illustrated children's books was delivered expertly packaged and on time. As for the finished product itself - stunning - a real joy to finally hold, beautifully made and perfectly printed! We couldn't have asked for more. Well, we did - we instantly placed an order for paperback children's colouring books too, which we are equally as happy with. Look forward to working with Ex Why Zed again in the future.
